GristHub: your new hub for templates and widgets!

Hi Grist community!

TL;DR: GristHub, your new hub for templates and widgets by and for Grist community! If you want this live, drop a comment in this conversation or fill this Grist working group form

Context

During Grist summit we had a very passionate discussion about “How to turn Grist into digital commons?”. We discussed about templates and widgets, the challenges to keep up to date with the latest versions, how to share them… and also the question about the community ecosystem which should not rely only on GristLabs.
This all led me to think about a solution I’d like to have: GristHub!

What is it?

GristHub would be a place to find all the existing templates and widgets and be able to share what you’ve made.

Currently every Grist instance has its own templates available but you cannot easily find and share them. In the same way, widgets are built in anyone’s repos and we can have the URL but it’s hardly browsable. The idea is to gather everything in a same place.

Suggestion

Based on other existing hubs (see “Resources” below) I’ve made a Figma prototype draft of what it could look like. Basically it is a catalog with categories and filters available. Each component has a dedicated page with more information and an action button to easily use this element.
On the contributor side, there would be a Grist form to quickly submit an idea.
Those ideas would be stored in a Grist document that could act as a database for the front-end website.

What’s next?

For now it’s only an idea… But if you want to make it happen, let’s build this community hub together!
First let’s see how many of you are interested and then we could organize ourselves with task forces on dedicated topics and regular meetings.

Interesting. Will take a closer look at the Resources*…

*btw, in English a single S. Yes, if it has a single S it should have a Z sound in English (it happens with desert, case, fase, nasal, NASA, chase, and thousands of other words in English. But hey, I am a fellow romance language speaker, don’t blame me for English inconsistencies)

(just edited now, thanks!)

A great idea!
Count me in.
(with all my limited capabilities)

Love this idea! We gave it a shout out in our newsletter: 2025/02 - Grist Help Center

Happy to contribute ideas.

In terms of design, we need to be careful around use of Grist Labs’ logo, trademark, and branding. The goal is to prevent confusion among our users and reserve our brand for things we at Grist Labs (the company) manage or have well integrated into our offering.

There’s a community organization called la Fédération Français de Grist (FFG) which has already discussed with us their logo. It is inspired-by, but not exactly like, Grist Labs’ logo. They’re also keen to grow FFG as a community-led project. I wonder if GristHub would fit well into their idea, and could use their logo? If that’s interesting to you, I can put you in touch with the FFG members I’m in contact with.

Hi Anais!

Thanks for the reminder about design, it was just a quick draft but indeed we should be careful about how we use it and I’ll remind it

And I’d be glad to contact the FFG indeed so if you can put me in touch that would be perfect!

Besides for those who are interested, feel free to take the lead on this project because on my side I have plenty of other things to do before and unfortunately it is not a priority right now.
