Hi Grist community!
TL;DR: GristHub, your new hub for templates and widgets by and for Grist community! If you want this live, drop a comment in this conversation or fill this Grist working group form
Context
During Grist summit we had a very passionate discussion about “How to turn Grist into digital commons?”. We discussed about templates and widgets, the challenges to keep up to date with the latest versions, how to share them… and also the question about the community ecosystem which should not rely only on GristLabs.
This all led me to think about a solution I’d like to have: GristHub!
What is it?
GristHub would be a place to find all the existing templates and widgets and be able to share what you’ve made.
Currently every Grist instance has its own templates available but you cannot easily find and share them. In the same way, widgets are built in anyone’s repos and we can have the URL but it’s hardly browsable. The idea is to gather everything in a same place.
Suggestion
Based on other existing hubs (see “Resources” below) I’ve made a Figma prototype draft of what it could look like. Basically it is a catalog with categories and filters available. Each component has a dedicated page with more information and an action button to easily use this element.
On the contributor side, there would be a Grist form to quickly submit an idea.
Those ideas would be stored in a Grist document that could act as a database for the front-end website.
What’s next?
For now it’s only an idea… But if you want to make it happen, let’s build this community hub together!
First let’s see how many of you are interested and then we could organize ourselves with task forces on dedicated topics and regular meetings.
